Voter Registration

Most Americans who reside abroad are eligible to vote in US elections. Eligibility depends upon the laws and regulations of your legal state of residence. There is no possibility of casting a ballot at the embassy for any election in the United States. The embassy can assist voters to cast an absentee ballot with the election authorities of their state of residence. The absentee voting process is designed to permit citizens who will be away from their local polling places on Election Day to vote by mail. As such, this process requires that the absentee voter request a ballot at least 60 days before the scheduled election date.

The Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) is a postage-free postcard printed and distributed by the Federal government for absentee voters. The FPCA also enables one to register and apply for an absentee ballot at the same time. However, the extent and manner of the use of the FPCA is regulated by State law, and to a lesser extent, local procedures. To obtain an FPCA, contact the American Citizens Services office (ACS).
