On Monday, October 25, U.S. Ambassador Pamela Willeford hosted an Iftaar dinner for select members of the Muslim diplomatic corps. This marks the second time that Ambassador Willeford celebrated the traditional breaking of the fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The celebration began at sunset with a call to prayer, and concluded with a formal dinner hosted by the Ambassador.

In her welcoming remarks, Ambassador Willeford spoke of the importance all Americans place on religious tolerance: "Over one billion people around the world practice Islam, including millions of Americans. The United States values its Muslim citizens, and the diversity that they bring to our society. In fact, it is this diversity that helps to create the American character."

President George W. Bush also recognizes this fact. In his Ramadan message, he says that: "American history has taught us to welcome the contributions of men and women of all faiths, for we share the fundamental values of religious freedom, love of family, and gratitude to God. Americans who practice the Islamic faith enrich our society and help our Nation build a better future."

"Ramadan commemorates the revelation of the Qur'an to Muhammed. By teaching the importance of compassion, justice, mercy, and peace, the Qur'an has guided many millions of believers across the centuries. Today, this holy time is still set aside for Muslims to remember their dependence on God through fasting and prayer, and to show charity to those in need," said President Bush.

President Bush will also host an Iftaar dinner for the diplomatic corps and other guests.
