Health and Medical Information Sheet: Bern

General

Attached is a list of hospitals, doctors, dentists and other professional medical personnel who are known to speak English. The bona fides of all practitioners in Bern have been authenticated by the Swiss Doctor's Association. The choice of a physician is a private matter. The Embassy cannot make any recommendations or assume any responsibility for the professional judgment or integrity of the persons or institutions listed below.

Any appointment which has not been cancelled 24 hours in advance either by telephone or fax will unfortunately be billed to you. Thank you for your understanding.
 
It is customary, after he examines you, to ask a dentist for an estimate for the work to be done.

Fees for outpatient appointments for physicians and dentists are regulated by a system called Tarmed, using Tarmed points. The rate for a general practitioner is about CHF 15.00 per 5 minutes excluding any procedures or medication, which will be charged additionally. Specialists are more expensive. The Tarmed system was introduced in 2004 and is controlled by the Swiss law. More information is available on the website: www.tarmedsuisse.ch or www.fmh.ch.

Most family physicians are not available on Thursday afternoons but are until 11 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Specialists are usually available Mon-Fri.
 
There are no particular health hazards in Bern, and no precautionary measures necessary regarding water, milk supply, foodstuffs, etc.

Medical Emergencies

In case of medical emergencies call the ambulance 144 or go to an emergency room at a hospital. There is also a weekend duty physician service available (Tel. 0900 57 67 47).

The closest emergency rooms to the Chancery are located in the Clinic Sonnenhof, Buchserstrasse 30 (for minor surgery) or the Inselspital (full range of services available). The Sonnenhof is near the Ostring Autobahn interchange; the Inselspital is located at Freiburgstrasse (across Monbijou Bridge and past Eigerplatz). There is also an emergency room not attached to a hospital near the main station in Bern. It is City Notfall and open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. in Bubenbergplatz, opposite the statue of Adrian von Bubenberg on the first floor.

Proof of health insurance is always required and a deposit estimated as a portion of hospital expense may also be charged. Some medical practitioners and institutions may require an advance deposit for routine or scheduled outpatient services for patients who are not enrolled in a Swiss insurance plan.
