Donald S. Beyer, U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and his wife Megan donated an endangered tree (Speierling, sorbus domestica) to the Botanical Garden in Bern on behalf of the People of the United States to the People of the Swiss Confederation.  The tree planting occurred Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 02.00 p.m.

The donation is in commemoration of the recent anniversary of September 11, 2001.  President Obama proclaimed September 11th as “Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.”  The President called upon the People of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost.  In that spirit, the Ambassador will donate a tree -- a commonly used symbol for peace and harmony.

The Ambassador and his wife were joined by Verena Gysin, CEO of the Botanical Garden (http://boga.unibe.ch).
